Considerations when purchasing an external hard disk for Xbox One

After almost nine years since its release, the Xbox One has gone through several iterations. It was originally released in 2013, but due to supply issues, Microsoft stopped selling them in 2017. Now, they’re back again.

The new Xbox Ones do not require SSDs; they can run off traditional spinning platters just fine. But Microsoft does recommend them because, well, they're faster. And if you ever do buy one of those fancy new Xbox Ones, you'll definitely want to make sure you've got enough room for all your games and movies.

Minimum requirements

You should consider how large an amount of data you're willing to store before buying an Xbox One S. While you can theoretically add up to 1TB of space to your console, there's no reason to go beyond 500GB if you don't plan on playing any games larger than 2GB. You'll need to be able to plug in a microSD card to expand your capacity; the Xbox One doesn't support SD cards natively.

There's one more thing: You shouldn't be using an external hard disk to back up Xbox One game saves and other files from other connected devices. If you connect a hard disk to your Xbox One, the console will ask you to format the device, erasing any saved content. Once formatted, you won't be able to access the hard disk for anything else until you format it again, deleting all the game saves.

As long as your hard disk meets the minimum specifications for an external hard disk, you can connect any external hard disk to your Xbox One.

Don't spend too much on an Xbox One.

Since you're limited by the speed of the internal hard drives in the Xbox One, you should also limit yourself when choosing which external hard drives to use with your system. If you buy the fastest one available, you won't get any performance improvements.

It’d be great news if there were no downsides to buying a large 16TB hard drive for $1,000, but unfortunately, there are.

Unless you're planning to invest in a Series S or Series E round,

Of course, the equations change if you're planning to buy one of Microsoft's fourth generation "series" consoles. You can't use an external hard disk to save and load old Xbox game discs, but you can use one to transfer and run older Xbox titles. Most Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles are compatible with both Xbox Series X and S, so you'll only need one unit to get started. Simply remove the disc tray from your current console and attach it to the new system. You won't need to reformat or repartition any drives either; just make sure to keep them plugged in during setup.

When it comes to loading times, the speed at which your external hard drive loads your files matters. An SSD is significantly quicker than an HDD and the PS4 Pro can unpack and play new titles faster. How fast they will be depends on the title, but most of them will run faster and perform better on Sony’s newest console.

What kind of games do you play?

Games are currently measured in gigabytes (GB) rather than kilobytes (KB). A game can easily reach hundreds of GBs, so you should keep that in consideration before purchasing any new games. However, your hard drive space may not be enough to hold all of these large titles, especially if you're planning to add them to your collection. For example, Grand Theft Auto V takes up around 94GB, Red Dead Redemption II is 110GB, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is 120GB. These are just three examples out of dozens of big games released recently. You could end up spending more money buying a bigger hard drive than you did on the games themselves!
