How to choose the right binoculars for you.

By looking at them, one could think that there isn't much difference between them. However, some may be larger than others but, by an average, they're made up of two barrels connected by a hinge in the middle, with lenses at either end.

Go deeper into the details, however, and you'll learn there's a whole range of features and specifications that define how good a pair of glasses are and the kind of activities they're suitable for.

Which kind of binoculars would be best for me?

If you've ever bought or tried binoculars before, you may have noticed that most pairs of binoculars have a number printed somewhere on them.

A 10mm lens has an aperture of f/10 meaning that at its widest setting, it allows for one tenth of the light coming through the camera’s lens to pass through. It lets in less light than a 50mm lens which has an aperture of f/.5 meaning that at its widest settings, it allows for half the light coming through the lens to pass through.

The most important thing about any image is how much detail it contains. A good rule of thumb is to double your resolution before printing. So if you're planning to print something out, make sure you can print it twice!

When viewing an object at close range, such as through a telescope, microscope, camera lens or binoculars, it becomes difficult to maintain focus on the subject due to the small size of the target. To overcome this problem, people often magnify the image by holding the device closer to the eye. This works because the brain perceives objects further away as being smaller; thus, they appear larger in proportion to the eye itself. In order to compensate for this effect, one must increase the magnification of the instrument used to observe the object.

For both activities, the best magnification level depends on the type of telescope you use.

For birding and wildlife spotting binoculars, the best choice is an 8x pair. These give you a reasonable range of vision — usually between seven and eight degrees — and a good level of magnification, which means they’re easy to handle without getting too much shaking.

If you're more of a star gazer, you might want to start out with a higher magnification level (12×) but you'll need to attach them to a sturdy stand if you want something like a stable look. You'll also need to consider whether you'd prefer to use them hand held or from a reclining position on a lounge chair on your patio. A 10x pair would be ideal for longer distance views, like observing passing boats if you're on the shore.

There isn't any real advantage to buying binoculars that have larger lenses.

A large objective (or "lense") has a greater light-gathering capacity than a smaller one. Too small, however, makes the binocular blurry and dim; too big makes them impractical.

That’s one reason we've mainly focused on binocular pairs with 42mm objective lens sizes. If you want compact binocular pairs, choose ones with either 25mm or 32mm objectives.

If you're mainly going to be using your telescope to look at the stars, you can go ahead and buy bigger telescopes. 7x40, 8x42, 9x44, 10x45, 11x46, 13x52, 14x54, 16x56, 17x58, 18x60, 19x62, 21x64, 22x66, 24x68, 25x72, 27x74, 28x76, 30x78, 32x80, 36x84, 40x88, 45x90, 50x100, 55x110, 60x120, 65x130, 70x140, 75x150, 80x160, 85

If you're looking for an inexpensive pair of binoculars, then you can use a 25, 26, or 30mm pair of binoculars with magnifications ranging from 7x to 10x.

Binoculars magnify objects by a factor of x (8x for 8x binoculars) and have lenses of size y (42mm for 8x binocular lenses). A 10x25 binocular lens magnifier has 10x and 25mm lenses.

Do I need to care about features such as prisms or ED glasses?

Other terms you may hear associated with binoculars include Porro prisms, roof prisms, and ED glasses.

  • For the best possible viewing experience, we recommend using an ED or HD lens. These lenses reduce chromatic aberration, which causes blurring of images due to light refraction. Chromatic aberration occurs because each color of light has a specific wavelength associated with it; blue light has a shorter wavelength than red light, for instance, meaning that they travel faster through air. Because of this difference, blue light bends differently than red light does, causing colours to shift out of alignment. Using an ED or HD lens reduces this effect
